“Page 111, so true, Jason Lomelino. So many outward signs may say otherwise, but so true!”

This last week a friend wrote this on my Facebook wall (a father in this generation), he was referring what I wrote in The Family of God book under the section Fathering & Mothering:

I want to be frank to those reading this who currently are in the roles of spiritual fathers or mothers. The cry of the younger generation is they have older people in their lives. This generation is looking for those who have the desire to invest time, love, and energy into their lives. Don’t be misled by the lack of church attendance, rebellious ways, or generational differences of tattoos, speech, or clothing that seems to suggest this younger generation has no need or want for you. God designed us for family and put in each of us an innate desire for older people to help us along and champion us in life

Whenever I think about the needs of the church in America today, I can’t think of a greater need than spiritual fathers and mothers. We need spiritual parents who are willing to discover that there is no greater joy than to see their children walk in the truth (3 John 1:4). The Old Testament ends with God making a promise to restore the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers (Malachi 4:6). The younger generation is fearful of authority and scared that anyone older than them will not value who they are or the dreams in their hearts. They are afraid that we will try to mold them into replicas of who we are and what we believe.

I still stand by what I wrote here. This generation needs/wants fathers and mothers, those who will say yes to them and be willing to walk with them through the different stages of life.

I am very encouraged by what I see happening amongst the generations. Heaven is doing a marvelous work in turning the hearts of the generations toward one another. The younger generation is realizing the fruit of the 60’s, the disregard for the older generation, isn’t what they want. This generation wants family, community, and life together. I am convinced the best days await the church and the unity of the generations.

“I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in Me through their message. May they all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You. May they also be one in Us, so the world may believe You sent Me.” – Jesus
